Rosenstigen is named after a rose found in monastery environments, Rosa alba ‘Gudhem’. A nature trail, about 2 km, through a cultural landscape that tells the story of how people have lived here for thousands of years.
This is the ruin of one of Swedens oldest christian churches, a private farm church from the viking era. The place is called Kata Gård, and during excavations the archeologists have made sensational finds that tell us about the time before the monks arrived in the 12th century. The crypt may very well be the oldest preserved room in the country.
Kata Gård has gotten its name after the woman that ruled the large farm during the end of the viking era. Her skeleton is one of the most important finds of the excavations. The excavations have led to a changed image of the Swedish history since it shows that Varnhem was christened a century before the rest of the country. Inside the wooden building there is an interesting exhibition where you can learn everything about the christian vikings.
