Rosenstigen is named after a rose found in monastery environments, Rosa alba ‘Gudhem’. A nature trail, about 2 km, through a cultural landscape that tells the story of how people have lived here for thousands of years.
The lake of the monks has now been restored by building a dam, just like the monks did in the medieval times. Before the lake was restored, archeological examinations were made which show that the lake is a natural peat moss. This means there has been a lake here for many thousand years – the lake was formed when the inland ice melted after the last ice age 10 000 years ago.
When the monks had left Varnhem there was no use for a lake any more, and the old dam was torn down. The lake has now been restored, and just like the monks did in their time we can now look out over a calm lake.
