Rosenstigen is named after a rose found in monastery environments, Rosa alba ‘Gudhem’. A nature trail, about 2 km, through a cultural landscape that tells the story of how people have lived here for thousands of years.
Ulunda limestone quarry operated by Hammarsbacken in the so called old quarry, also known as Hammaren. Theories point to that the quarry was used as early as when the monks lived here in Varnhem.
The workers did most of the work by hand, but they also had winches and other tools to help them. Simple railway constructions were used to facilitate the transport. A lot of people from Varnhem got their first employment outside of farming here at the quarry.
The quarry mainly produced cement to large industrial constructions.
