The cranes here at Lake Hornborgasjön are common cranes. The scientific name for this species is Grus grus. Worldwide, there are a total of fifteen different species of cranes. All of the others live far away, mostly in Asia.

Onwards on warm winds
A day arrives when the cranes decide to move on. They leave in the morning, when the sun has warmed the air. The warm air rises and helps the cranes soar skywards. And the journey begins again!

Thanks to the table top mountains, Lake Hornborgasjön lies in a kind of depression. This means that thermals are formed here. Thermals are warm winds that rise up. Birds use thermals when they need to gain height. In this way, birds such as cranes and raptors save a lot of energy.
