The flight paths and resting areas are known thanks to the work of the ringers. Through different combinations of coloured rings, each bird is given a unique identification. More recently, GPS transmitters have also come into use. 
Nearly all the cranes that stop at Lake Hornborgasjön fly on once they have eaten and rested. Many have their nesting sites in western Central Sweden and in Norway. They stay for a week or two at the Lake.

Here since the Stone Age?
No-one knows for sure, but it’s possible that the cranes adopted Lake Hornborgasjön as a resting place 10,000 years ago. Perhaps it was their spring trumpeting that greeted the first humans to set foot here.
