Cranes are faithful to each other. A pair will often mate for life. Cranes are believed to dance in order to create a sense of togetherness. It's not just the adult pairs that do it. Parents and their young dance together to strengthen family ties. Here at the Lake, the dance floor is often packed. The noise can be deafening. Flapping, bowing, jumping, with the occasional pirouette thrown in, the cranes have all the moves.
”You’re in luck,” they said to the white goosey-gander, ”to be permitted to attend the great crane dance!”
”Is it then so remarkable to see cranes dance?” asked the goosey-gander. ”It is something that you have never even dreamed about!” replied the wild geese. From The Wonderful Adventures of Nils by Selma Lagerlöf.
