Young cranes live with their parents for all of the first year of life. They have a lot to learn: what dangers to avoid, what to eat, where to find food, where and how to migrate. 

Initially, the young are fed by their parents and they eat mostly insects. After a few days, they begin searching out their own food.

The crane hatchling weighs around 200 grams. In just a couple of months, it will have put on 4-5 kilos. And learned to fly.
