Most of the cranes to be seen around Lake Hornborgasjön overwinter in southern Spain. In mid-February, they leave their wintering areas and point their long bills northwards. They migrate along a fixed route over France and Germany, crossing the snowy peaks of the Pyrenees along the way. In March, they arrive back here to rest at Lake Hornborgasjön.

A long day’s journey
Before the last phase of their flight, the cranes make a pit stop in northern Germany. There, they eat and wait for good weather. With a following wind, the cranes manage the remaining 500 kilometres in a single day, reaching up to 70 km per hour.
