Roughly 100,000 cranes come to Sweden and Norway every spring. A third of them rest around Lake Hornborgasjön. The total European population numbers some 340,000 cranes. In autumn too, many cranes come here, on the way south to their wintering areas. In September and October, whole crane families can be seen looking for food at the Lake.

Summer cranes
Every summer, a couple of hundred young cranes stay behind at Lake Hornborgasjön. With luck, they can be seen practising their dance steps at sunrise. Cranes reach sexual maturity when 4-5 years old. Only then do they start flyying on to their nesting areas.
