Hornborgasjön
Locations
Info

One of Sweden's richest bird lakes. Commonly known for the amount of cranes that stop at the lake before flying on towards and from their breeding grounds. On pillars in the lake you find the visitor center Hornborgasjön, an information center including an exhibition about the lake's history and bird life. Hornborgasjön is an over 4000 hectare large nature reserve. The reserve includes mainly the lake and its shoreline, but also some of the old farmland east of the lake.

Ålleberg

On Ålleberg plateau mountain, by following the hiking trails you can visit the excellent Glider Museum, have a snack in the café or walk in the beautiful countryside and browse among the different rare species on the plateau mountain.

Hiking

Ålleberg is the highest of the Falköping plateau mountains and rises about hundred metres above the surrounding landscape, giving a beautiful view of the Falbygden region. Water springs bubble up at the foot of the mountain and on its slopes. Among the best-known are Hokällan at Ålleberg "änne".

There are several hiking trails in the area, from 1½ kilometres and longer. Most start at the café, but some start from the stopover site at the foot of the mountain.

Ålleberg Riders

There are many legends about the plateau mountain, one of them is about the Ålleberg Riders, who stand in full armour, sleeping in a secret cavern to be able to turn out if Falköping is in danger. There is also a cloud of mystery around the 1,500 year old and 6 hg heavy gold collar which was found in 1827 in a scree. The collar is considered one of the finest gold items discovered in Sweden, and there is a copy of it in Falbygden Museum.
