Hornborgasjön
Locations
Info

One of Sweden's richest bird lakes. Commonly known for the amount of cranes that stop at the lake before flying on towards and from their breeding grounds. On pillars in the lake you find the visitor center Hornborgasjön, an information center including an exhibition about the lake's history and bird life. Hornborgasjön is an over 4000 hectare large nature reserve. The reserve includes mainly the lake and its shoreline, but also some of the old farmland east of the lake.

Naturum Lake Hornborga

Birdlife centre

Hornborgasjön is one of Europe’s most important bird lakes. The best place to start your visit is at Naturum Lake Hornborga with its exhibitions, information and knowledgeable personnel. From there, you can continue to Trandansen (Crane Dance) to see the birds.

At Fågeludden Point on the east side of Lake Hornborga, where the plateau mountain Billingen rises as a backdrop, stands Naturum Lake Hornborga on pillars in the water. Here the personnel can guide you around the area’s nature, geology and history. Naturum also functions as a link to other nature-related features, for example the crane dance. Among other things you can see films, borrow binoculars and gain new knowledge through the exhibition about the lake’s history and birdlife.

Utsikt and hiking

Close to Naturum, at the end of Fågeludden Point towers Utsikten, a beautiful limestone and oak panorama point. If you follow the wide plankway, you pass two hides. If you are quiet and have a little patience you can see birds at close range. There are grebes, ducks, coots, waders and a large colony of black-headed gulls.

Around Naturum there are also several hiking trails which follow the water meadows and pass through the cultural landscape, one of them the Pilgrim’s Trail between Falköping and Varnhem.
