Kata farm - axe

Click on the AR symbol in the image above.

You will now see a picture of one side of the weapon axe found together with the skeleton of a robust man measuring 178 cm in length, who died in his 40s or 50s. The axe shows several pieces of rusted fabric from the clothing in which the man was buried. It is a fine textile with thin threads. Impressions of pupae of flesh-eating beetles are also visible in one place. The axe had a wooden handle, and parts of it were still present inside the shaft hole when the axe was found. The slightly curved edge is still sharp.
An axe like this was part of the Vikings' normal weapon equipment, which could also include swords, spears, bows, and shields. The axe could be used in close combat and could also be thrown quite far at an enemy.
This is an unusual grave find in a Christian cemetery. Perhaps the axe was a personal belonging of great significance to the deceased man, a faithful companion on western military expeditions to England.
